So this is going to be a small short story of what I went through to get to the point of Self Publishing and the shock of actually selling E-books.
I ended up selling 100 e-books 10 days after self publishing my first main book -Sweet Submission– on Amazon Kindle.
First off, I’ve been writing little stories since I was in middle school. I have always loved writing, probably because I have always loved reading. The amazing stories that have touched my heart and made me scream or cry or jump up and down with joy are the kind of books I have always dreamt of writing. There is nothing better than hearing someone is having fan squeal moment over something I wrote.
This all started in October of 2015. It is now February 2016.
My boyfriend of 2 months at the time found out that I love to write and wanted to see my work. After reading some of my works that I was confident enough to show him, he suggested I send them to a author friend of his to see if I have potential to actually get published. I sent the teasers of several stories and got a response within a day. She suggested that I join Wattpad and refine my writing as I try to gather a readership/following. So with a little prodding from my boyfriend telling me to give it a try, I did.
I joined wattpad and started writing. I posted some already finished works and was not surprised when they didn’t really gather that much steam. So I tried something new and I was shocked when I went from having 78 views on a completely finished work to having over 1000 views on a work in progress with only 3 unedited chapters. Even more shocking was the more chapters I finished on the new book, the more views I was getting and the more followers I was gaining.
Going from having 15 followers to over 3000 followers in 3 months still leaves me speechless. My main book, Sweet Submission, is now at over a half million views. I would like to say that I was not asked to advertise for wattpad in anyway shape or form. This is my actual experience on that site and my actual feelings about it and how it has helped me to become confident in my work. To me, Wattpad is an amazing site to find great feedback on your works. I have enjoyed getting feedback on my chapters as they are posted and even enjoy the critiques given that are helpful. Even more so, I adore my readers for their passion for my books.
It was a dream of mine to one day have a Fandom and ships of my very own characters. Now that is a reality. I even got sent some FanArt of my characters by a reader! When this happened I bawled like a baby and was over the moon happy that someone could love my characters enough to make a actual fanart of them. It still amazes me that something I created has accumulated such a following at the very beginning of my career as an Author.
think finding a way to gain a following or readership is very helpful to any Author that is starting out the grueling and nerve frying journey to Self Publishing, let alone trying to get published the old fashioned way. Wattpad gave me the chance to gain a readership at the very start of everything. I have to say that it helps so much to know that even these strangers on this site enjoy the unedited books I have online so far. Plus, it is a great way to meet other online authors.
Now I will remind everyone that I said I have a following of over 3000 and yet I only sold 100 books the first 10 days that my E-Book Sweet Submission was self published on Amazon Kindle. Wattpad is a completely free site so not everyone that follows you is going to put down money for a book. It’s more of a sound board for your works to see if they have the legs and potential to gain a following.
I have also been self promoting on Facebook and Tumblr and Twitter. I use my social media apps as much as I can to get my work out there. I also tinker and refine my own covers and promotional banners and adds. So its a lot of work. I try to do my best to promote myself and my books as best I can. I feel that is also an attributing factor in reaching a 100 books sold in 10 days. To be completely honest I hope that my book itself is enticing enough to bring in readers, too.
Without the amazing support of my boyfriend , who is my self proclaimed Biggest Fan, I probably would never have felt confident enough to try to make my dream of becoming an Author a reality. He has been with me every step of the way and was the first person to buy both of my published works.
Yes, I am new to self publishing and all of this, but I feel the support from my following has gotten me to a place where I can say that 100 of my books sold in 10 days after self publishing. I never thought that I would get here and be able to say all this. I feel very fortunate to be supported by some very amazing people! And just because you never thought you could actually reach your dreams doesn’t mean you shouldn’t try. Remember, you won’t live out your dreams if you never take that first step towards achieving them.
