Description: Created as a haven for all, Wiccandra was supposed to be a safe place...
When headstrong teenager Poppy and her young brother are trapped in a house fire it looks like there is no possible escape for the two siblings. Rescue comes however from the most unlikely of places and the pair are dragged into a dangerous world created in the 1600's by the last of Earth's witches and warlocks.
Poppy is shocked to discover that their saviour is an elephant who has been bound in a magical painting for centuries and the animal vows to find a way home for his charges. However the worst thing possible happens when the group are targeted by a sinister coven, who double cross the elephant to separate him from the siblings and Poppy is sold into slavery while her brother is sacrificed in a dark ceremony.
Poppy is distraught after the loss of her brother but is determined to escape her fate and quickly begins searching for a way out. Knowing nothing about magic and this world she had ended up in, her task seems almost impossible but Poppy will not accept this new life without a fight!
The elephant meanwhile, searches for Poppy and her brother with the help of a small white rat he has befriended and a young warlock, but soon realises that they must find allies in this dangerous place filled with witches, warlocks and other fairy tale creatures if he is to have any chance of success.
My Review This was a very imaginative, entertaining read. The plot kept moving at a fast pace, and the characters were all fascinating, from the large elephant who could speak to humans, to the spirit of the white trees that couldn't bear to see a child's pain. Poppy, our heroine, and her brother Mike, and the characters they meet along the way are compelling and I couldn't help but care about their fate, and rage at my Kindle when bad things kept happening!
I was a little hesitant at the beginning, from the perspective of the elephant Jenali. But as the story progressed, Poppy emerged as a strong main character that I couldn't help but root for. The world of Wiccandra is crafted beautifully, and becomes easy to fall into. This is a world created by and for witches, who also allowed all other magical creatures to join them in this world where return to Earth is impossible.
When two young children are brought by the magical elephant granted a one-way pass to Wiccandra, the reader is shown the beauty, and growing evil, in this world that has evolved so differently from Earth.
With another round of proofreading, this would be a highly enjoyable read. It does suffer from numerous mechanical issues that were somewhat distracting, but if you can overlook these, you'll really enjoy this book. I did think the book was a little violent for having such a young protagonist, and I'm not sure what age the intended audience is.
Summary: This is a great fantasy read about a world run by witches and inhabited by numerous magical creatures. While it could use a good proofread, it is highly enjoyable and I would certainly recommend it to any fan of fantasy.
